The Definition of Pipeline Degradation

Pipeline degradation is the progressive weakening of a candidate pipeline in an active search mandate — measured as slowing stage velocity, declining candidate volume, rising stage drop-off rates, and falling response rates on new outreach. Left undetected, pipeline degradation produces a stalled mandate; left unaddressed after detection, it produces a failed one.

The critical characteristic of pipeline degradation is that it is gradual. Unlike a sudden candidate dropout or a hiring manager who explicitly withdraws the mandate, degradation looks like a series of individually explicable events: one slow week of outreach, one shortlist that did not land, one interview cycle that took longer than expected. Only at the pattern level is it recognisable as degradation.
