VPS KPIs: How to Measure Success
Measuring a VPS on lagging operational metrics alone misses half the picture. The right scorecard blends execution quality with strategic contribution.
Operational KPIs
| Metric | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Quota attainment rate | Percentage of the sales team hitting individual quota — the primary measure of sales leadership effectiveness |
| Average deal size | Average contract value by segment — tracks whether the team is moving upmarket or down |
| Sales cycle length | Average days from first meeting to close — by segment and deal size |
| Win rate | Percentage of qualified opportunities that close — by competitor and segment |
| Ramp time to productivity | Days for new AEs to close their first deal and reach full quota productivity |
Strategic KPIs
These are harder to quantify but increasingly what boards and CEOs care about as the VPS mandate has expanded beyond its original scope.
| Metric | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Revenue forecast accuracy | How reliably the VP Sales predicts quarterly revenue within ±10% of actuals |
| Pipeline coverage ratio | Qualified pipeline relative to quarterly quota — healthy coverage is 3–4x |
| New segment penetration | Revenue closed in new customer segments or geographies per quarter |
Why the Scorecard Has Shifted
A VPS scorecard that only tracks operational metrics is measuring last decade's role. Boards in 2026 evaluate VPSs on strategic partnership — the quality of their judgment, their cross-functional influence, and whether they are making the organisation better over time. The best VPSs are measured on outcomes, not activity.
Operational discipline is table stakes. Strategic contribution is what separates VPSs who stay for three years from those who stay for ten.
