VPM Hiring Timeline: What to Expect

A well-run VPM search takes 75–105 days from mandate to acceptance. Most companies underestimate this by 30–40%. Here is what a realistic timeline looks like.

The Week-by-Week Timeline

What Slows Searches Down

Most VPM searches take longer than planned for avoidable reasons:

Criteria changes mid-process add 2–4 weeks per revision — alignment before sourcing starts is essential. Interview scheduling delays compound — if each stage takes 7+ days to schedule, a 4-stage process adds 3 weeks of unnecessary calendar drag. Compensation misalignment at the offer stage, discovered only after 10 weeks of process, loses the candidate and resets the search. Finally, internal approval delays — when the hiring decision requires multiple sign-offs not anticipated at the start of the search — consistently cause 2–3 week delays at the offer stage.

Most search delays are preventable. They result from problems at the start of the process that only become visible at the end.

What Accelerates Searches

Searches move fastest when: (1) the hiring criteria are locked before sourcing begins and change only if genuinely new information warrants it, (2) the hiring team can schedule within 48 hours at every stage, (3) the compensation package is pre-approved and reflective of market, and (4) a single decision-maker is empowered to extend the offer without committee approval. The fastest retained VPM searches close in 30–40 days. The slowest take 6+ months and frequently fail.
